Wi De - Open Decks June Edition

Summer arrives with Wi De, a relaxed evening at The Africa Centre celebrating African and diaspora music. Dance and discover sounds spanning Amapiano, Afrobeats, Highlife, Soukous, Dancehall, Zouk, Reggae and more. An open, welcoming space to listen, move, and connect over great energy. Wi De means "we are here" in Sierra Leonean Krio, and the music proves it.
Archives on Show: The Africa Centre

Explore archival material tracing the history of The Africa Centre, a London charity founded in 1961, connecting Africa and its diaspora through art, culture, and debate. Hosted by The London Archives in Clerkenwell, this relaxed, drop-in event on Friday 12 June lets you handle original documents at your own pace. Book a one-hour session at 1 pm or 2 pm. Free to attend.
The Steve Rhodes Centenary Celebration

The Iba Ajie & Africa Centre celebrate Steve Rhodes (1926–2008), Oxford graduate, Highlife pioneer, first African TV producer at WNTV Ibadan, founder of The Steve Rhodes Voices, and Fela Kuti's first manager. The event features a photo exhibition, bio-documentaries, a panel discussion, and a concert by boundary-pushing Afrobeat artist Cef Ashanta, whose music blends African roots with global soul.
Chakula x Open Dialogue Presents: Whot About it!

Whot About It? is a community games night centred on connection over competition. Open to beginners and seasoned players, the evening features icebreakers, free play, and real conversation in a chill, inclusive atmosphere. Spaces for Black British, African diasporic, and Black LGBTQ+ experiences. Part of The Africa Centre's Chakula programme. 18+. No pressure, just cards and community.

The Africa Centre is a home from home and offers welcoming and exciting spaces from our restaurant and bar to event spaces featuring live music , exhibitions and Africa Centre programme. You can also hire our spaces for your own event, be it a social occasion, team away day or community event.

Our Story

Originally conceived to foster non-governmental relations between newly independent Africa and Britain, The Africa Centre's mission is to educate, connect, and advocate for Africa and its diaspora. Previously located in Covent Garden, London for over five decades, we launched our new HQ in Southwark in June 2022.

Chakula is a monthly event series at the Africa Centre that supports and connects Black and African LGBTQ+ voices through workshops, dialogues, and cultural programs.
